We all know of people who exaggerate a little on their CVs to present themselves in a positive light, but how far do some candidates go? For example, you may have a candidate who says that they are a keen sports enthusiast, when in fact they would rather sit on the sofa with a cup of tea. Whilst this isn’t detrimental to their work - some candidates could take this further.
Do they have the right qualifications for the role? What is their employment history? And do they have any previous criminal offences?
These are the checks you should put in place when hiring new candidates. Not only to ensure that the information they are providing to you is honest, but so you can hire with confidence.
What is pre-employment screening?Pre-employment screening is the process of verifying the credentials of a job applicant to ensure that they meet predetermined job qualifications and requirements. Pre-employment screening checks can range from ‘DBS’, ‘Right to Work’ checks and much more. These checks ensure that the information the candidate has given you on their CV/application form is truthful, as well as a deeper understanding to determine if the candidate is trustworthy and reliable. Pre-employment checks also help companies know whether candidates are physically capable of completing the work and if they are legally allowed to work in the UK. In addition to this, pre-employment screening checks can be used to verify if an employee will fit into your company culture. It’s about getting the right people for the right roles, first time round!
When should you complete pre-employment screening checks?
You should complete screening checks during the hiring process! Make sure you do it before deciding on a hire. You can complete screening checks before and after an interview, but what are the benefits for both?
Screening before the interview
Screening before the interview can be very beneficial as it can allow you to make faster hiring decisions. This is because you are not wasting valuable time interviewing candidates who aren’t relevant for the position. It also means that you know all applicants are serious about applying for the job role with the intent to start the desired position as quickly as possible.
Screening after the interview
You may wish to screen after the interview if you would like to shortlist your candidates first based on their experience and personality shown in their applications/ interview. Once you have selected your top performing candidates you can then complete the pre-employment screening to ensure that they meet the job qualifications and requirements. Not only can this feel more authentic when selecting someone to join your team but you are only paying for screening services on the employees you want to offer the job role to.
How long do screening checks take?
As long as we have the required documentation, we aim to get all checks completed within 2 days. However, the process can take longer if we are waiting on information from the candidate/ associated companies. For example: when completing reference checks, the candidate will need to provide us with the reference details, we will then need the referee to respond. Whilst this may take longer than 2 days we do have steps in place to make sure this is completed as quickly as possible.
We are also very excited as we can make some screening checks even quicker. We can now offer automated screening checks which can be completed instantly! To help speed up the process we also have a team of experts just a phone call away to help you through any queries!
