Software Automation & Integration Engineer
Software Automation & Integration Engineer
Salary: £45,000 – £50,000 · Hybrid / remote in Chichester (depending on your location)
If you enjoy solving problems across software, APIs, integrations and automation, and prefer addressing underlying causes rather than repeatedly working around them, we would like to hear from you.
About the role
As SSS continues to grow, our platform needs to integrate effectively with more external systems, operational processes need to become increasingly automated, and technical issues need to be easier to identify and resolve.
We are looking for a Software Automation & Integration Engineer to work across software engineering, integrations and technical operations.
The role will focus on connecting systems, automating repetitive work and improving the reliability of our platform and supporting processes.
This is not a traditional feature-development role or a first-line support position. It is suited to someone who enjoys identifying the underlying cause of technical problems and implementing robust, maintainable solutions.
Key responsibilities
You will be responsible for:
- Building and maintaining integrations with external platforms
- Automating repetitive operational processes
- Monitoring APIs, integrations, queues and scheduled jobs
- Investigating technical failures and recurring issues
- Building internal tools that make problems easier to diagnose and resolve
- Creating reusable patterns for future integrations
- Contributing to our Laravel application where integration or automation work requires it
Everything you build should be secure, tested, observable and maintainable.
Integrations and automation
A significant part of the role will involve connecting SSS with external screening providers, client systems and SaaS platforms.
You will work with technologies including:
REST APIs, webhooks, OAuth, JSON, background jobs, queues and data flows.
You will also work with operational teams to identify processes that could be improved through automation.
The objective is not simply to automate for the sake of it. Solutions should remove meaningful manual work, reduce errors, improve service or enable the business to scale more effectively.
Depending on the requirement, the appropriate solution may be part of the Laravel application, a lightweight service, a script or an automated workflow.
We favour the simplest solution that remains secure, observable and maintainable.
Technical reliability
You will help investigate and resolve technical issues affecting integrations, automation and supporting systems.
This may include:
- Tracing API requests
- Examining logs
- Investigating failed webhooks
- Diagnosing queue or scheduled job failures
- Investigating unexpected data states
- Supporting technical incident investigation
Where possible, recurring problems should be detected earlier, monitored more effectively, automated or engineered out rather than repeatedly worked around.
Engineering environment
You will write production code and work alongside our Software Engineers where integrations, automation or reliability requirements touch the core application.
Our technology stack includes:
- PHP / Laravel
- React
- MySQL
- Laravel Vapor / AWS
Our engineering practices include:
- Git
- Pull requests
- Code review
- Testing
- CI/CD
- Controlled production changes
Automation and integration work is expected to meet the same engineering standards as our core product development.
Skills and experience
We are looking for someone who:
- Has professional experience in backend software development, integrations or automation
- Is comfortable working with PHP/Laravel, MySQL and SQL
- Understands REST APIs, HTTP, JSON, webhooks and OAuth
- Has experience with queues, scheduled jobs and background processing
- Can investigate technical issues using logs, errors and system behaviour
- Understands Git, CI/CD, testing and safe production changes
- Can read unfamiliar code and understand how systems fit together
- Is comfortable working with cloud infrastructure and modern delivery tooling such as AWS and Laravel Vapor
- Can communicate technical problems clearly
Strong software engineering fundamentals are more important than experience with every technology in our stack.
We are particularly interested in people who enjoy turning recurring technical problems into permanent solutions.
Working with AI
SSS supports the responsible use of AI tools within software engineering.
Engineers may use tools such as ChatGPT, Claude and Codex where they improve the quality or efficiency of their work.
AI literacy is increasingly part of modern engineering, but responsibility remains with the engineer. You will be expected to understand, review and take responsibility for the work you produce, regardless of whether AI tools have been used during the process.
