DBS Check

DBS Basic check

Basic DBS checks provide details of convictions and conditional cautions considered to be 'unspent' under the terms of the ROA (Rehabilitation of offenders Act) 1974. Anyone over the age of 16 is eligible for a Basic DBS check, and, unlike Standard or Enhanced checks, individuals can apply for their own check or it can be applied for by an employer.

DBS Check

Standard DBS check

Standard DBS checks contain details of 'spent' and 'unspent' convictions, cautions, reprimands and warnings. A candidate is only eligible for a Standard check if the role or the activities carried out within the role are included in the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974. An individual cannot apply for a Standard check by themselves, only a recruiting organisation can apply for this level of check.

DBS Check

Enhanced DBS check

Enhanced DBS checks contain details of 'spent' and 'unspent' convictions, cautions, reprimands and warnings, plus additional information held by the police. Should the role be eligible for it, an Enhanced check can also check the children and/or adults barred list which would determine whether the person has been barred from carrying out any regulated activity.

FAQs

What DBS check do I need?

Depending on what type of role your candidate will be doing, you will need a DBS check that will search for the relevant information. Get in touch with our team who will be happy to talk you through what your candidates are eligible for.

How long will a DBS Check take?

The below turnaround times are approximate and can vary.
- Basic DBS checks = 3-5 days
- Standard DBS checks = 10 days
- Enhanced DBS checks = 12(+) days

What does a Spent Conviction mean?

Standard and Enhanced DBS checks will show any spent convictions, however, Basic DBS checks will not show spent convictions.. Under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (ROA), eligible convictions or cautions become ‘spent’ after a specified period of time, known as the ‘rehabilitation period’.
The rehabilitation periods depend on:
- the sentence given or disposal administered as a result of a conviction
- the age of the individual on the date they are convicted

What does an Unspent Conviction mean?

A conviction is classed as ‘Unspent’ until a certain period of time has passed, also referred to as the ‘rehabilitation period’. A conviction can remain as ‘unspent’ depending on the crime, and the punishment handed out.

Do I have to conduct DBS checks as part of the onboarding process?

- Depending on the type of industry your candidate is working in and the job role they will be carrying out, it may be compulsory for a standard or enhanced DBS check to be carried out. Basic DBS checks can be carried out on anyone, and, although these checks aren’t necessarily compulsory it is advised that a DBS check is carried out. Our team will be able to help you find the correct level of checks your candidate is eligible for.
